the story behind the ring
As told by Gran (James’ Grandmother)
“In 1970 my father (James’ great-grandfather) surprised my mother (James’ great-grandmother) with a tiny gold-wrapped box on the Christmas tree. My parents had just returned from a trip to South Africa and they had flown from their home in Philadelphia to Denver to be with us for our first Christmas in Colorado. My mother was 60 years old. When she opened the gift, she was stunned. She sat with tears running down her cheeks; she couldn’t speak. All of her married life she had worn a plain gold band on her ring finger. I don’t remember her ever saying one thing about wanting a diamond engagement ring. I do know she loved her plain gold band; I wear it on my hand today.
But here she was….60 years old and my dad proudly slipped this sparkling diamond on her finger. It was a lovely moment that I shall never forget. My mother loved wearing this diamond ring! “
James’ great-grandmother was only able to wear the ring for nine years. She passed away at 69. James’ great-grandfather gave the ring to me shortly after her passing but it wasn’t until two years later that I began wearing the ring. I wore it with love everyday for the past 43 years until I passed it to James once he made the beautiful decision to marry Myranda.
As told by Myranda
“On December 6th, James proposed and presented me with the most gorgeous diamond ring I had ever seen. I was overwhelmed with excitement to be able to say I was going to marry my best friend and in complete awe over the diamond ring James had just placed on my finger. He then presented me with a letter from Gran. As I read the letter my eyes filled with tears. I could not believe James and I were given such a beautiful gift and the privilege of carrying on this ring. It is with great love and joy that I wear this ring everyday. Every time I look at my ring I am reminded of the deep, unconditional love James has for me; I am also reminded of two incredible women, one that I was not able to know, and another that holds a special place in both James’ and my life. Gran is a phenomenal woman who has served as a role model to her whole family and all that know her. Her love, dedication, and steadfastness have inspired her children and grandchildren to accomplish great things. She has always played a large part in James’ life and helped shape him into the wonderful man he is today. Knowing that a part of Gran and James’ great-grandmother will always be with us is truly the greatest gift.”
